Our team was invited to conduct two investigations at Flynn's
Steakhouse, Brodhead, Wi.
History:
Built in 1868, the building has changed hands numerous
times. Once known as the 'Young House' in the 19th
century, it eventually became the 'Harris House',
and finally 'Flynn's Steakhouse'. Once a thriving
hotel, the rooms upstairs now lay eerily dormant; old, torn
Victorian wallpaper still visible on the walls,
antique carpet remnants torn from age and numbers
still visible on the hallway room doors. This has been
said to be the place where the patrons of the old Brodhead
opera house would stay when in town to visit the theater.
Rumors have swirled for years regarding a child named
Mary who had died here between the years 1863 and 1867,
in a fire purportedly started when she tried to light a kerosene
lamp. We could not verify this, although others say they have.
Reports:
A young woman has been seen for numerous years, wearing
19th century clothing and "whispy" or "white" in
appearance. Lights on a Christmas tree in the establishment
were found turned on when a manager had come in for work
one morning after she had clearly remembered unplugging them
after work the night before and being the last one to leave for the
night.
Another manager had gone upstairs one evening to put money in
a safe. As she began to ascend the stairway to the 2nd floor,
she was startled to see a woman from the 1800's laying at the
top of the stairs, dressed in a white dress. The manager
ran immediately back downstairs. When one of the other
employees went up with her, a vagrant was discovered
and the police were called. The manager felt as though
this 'woman' had kept her from harm. A number of people,
including cleaning and kitchen staff would hear dragging
noises coming from the floors above. A tape recorder was
placed upstairs at one point and the sound of an old
player piano was heard upon playback. Gas burners on the
kitchen stove have repeatedly been ignited by themselves.
Numerous times dining room table candles were lit when staff
either came out of the kitchen after blowing out the candles for
the night or arrived in the morning to begin a day's work.
One of the owners had remarked that he was going to, "sell
this place", and an entire tray of glasses fell and smashed
to the floor. A loaf of bread was seen levitating briefly by a cook
and a manager in the kitchen area. This manager also described
another experience, “Upon returning from a night off, the following
morning, the dining table closest to the register had an old time
flannel cloth draped over it rather than our traditional white linen table
cloth. Nobody to this day knows where it came from.”
The initial investigation was on 8-25-07. Temperature was
77 F, Humidity 93%, Wind NW at 6, Solar Normal, Geomagnetic
Quiet, moon waxing at 94% full. Four investigators were present.
To begin, the team had dinner in the dining room with the manager
and spoke to the staff about their experiences while employed there.
While we waited for our dinner to arrive, we toured the establishment,
including the upstairs floors where the hotel rooms once were. With
three stories, old, wooden staircases, corridors that twist and turn and
doorways at every glance, Flynn's is a paranormal investigator's
dream location.
Recorders were left on the 3rd floor in a quiet location, devoid
of background noise while we left and had dinner.
The investigation began after all of the restaurant patrons had
left for the evening so as to avoid any background noise. All four
team members began on the 2nd floor. After approximately an
hour and a half, we moved on to the 3rd floor.
Other than the eerie feeling that the atmosphere naturally gives off,
activity this night was low. There were no personal experiences,
no positive photos or video were captured and nothing out of the
ordinary was noted on any of the meters or equipment. EVP was
positive but the voices are somewhat low (quiet). The EVP captures,
can be heard at right.
The second investigation was conducted on 5-16-08. Temperature
was 62 F, humidity 48%, light rain. Moon waxing gibbous. 2
investigators were present.
We began in the old banquet area on the 2nd floor. Noises were
heard from the 3rd floor above and the two abnormal EMF
fluctuations were noted at roughly the same time that the
noises were heard - one spiking to 4.0. Two cameras
malfunctioned and an eight degree temperature drop was
noted on the 3rd floor landing. Near the end of the investigation,
we sat alone in a back room on the 3rd floor at the end of a hallway.
After some time, we heard what sounded like shuffling coming
from down the hallway toward our door, which was closed. One
of the investigators got up to open the door, assuming that the
manager was going to close up for the night, but when she
looked out and down the corridor, no one was there. Immediately
following an EVP was captured by both investigator's recorders.
Photos were positive. EVP was positive and can be heard at right.
We are grateful to have had the opportunity to twice investigate Flynn's
Steakhouse and as a team do believe that the witnesses to the strange
happenings there throughout the years can not easily be dismissed.
The restaurant closed its doors the following day.
